Statement

My work is about light, trying to catch the moment in rich and vibrant oil paints. Fresh mark-making with brush and knife, painting en plein air or in the studio, I enjoy trying to find the unusual view. Enabling the viewer to see a subject in a new way. 

When painting on the South West coast, the dramatic rock striations and huge tidal ranges in these stretches of coastline shift rapidly in appearance beneath the expanse of sky and the work aims to capture these textures, the reflections and light. Most of the painting is undertaken braced against the elements, building up multiple layers of sheer glazes and thick impasto, suggesting the scale and atmosphere of the place.  

My cityscapes explore the nocturnal effects of light, in the visual chaos, hustle and bustle of city life, depicting movement and atmosphere with bold brush-marks and a lightness of touch.  

This contrast between the open, wild and vast spaces along the Bristol channel, juxtaposed with the claustrophobic noise of the city, inform and inspire my work.  

I paint primarily in oils, as the rich colours and wide-ranging methods of application help me to create the textures and depth I am looking for. I apply paint with brush, knife, fingers, whatever comes to hand and often turn up in the house completely covered in paint.
