I am an Archaeologist turned Artist influenced by years of observation of the landscape and exploration of the overt and hidden elements. I am constantly fascinated by the interconnection between the present and past and the constant and changing relationships experienced at the liminal space. My practice has developed with the feeling that the ancient world is not distant but resonates in the landscapes and structures around us in the present. Within ancient landscapes one can feel a sense of suspension between the past and the future and this invocation of the surreal helps to evoke both an escape from the banal and a feeling of freedom and release. They can elevate while generating a sense of catharsis.
Working from Riverside Studios near Bath I am inspired by an emotional response to these ever-present features around us, drawing on the textures and colours of history and the natural world to create paintings that live between memory and imagination. My work spans a variety of media, often using a palimpsest of layers and with figurative and abstracted elements, to evoke a sense of these feelings and experiences.
