I am a hand embroidery artist, inspired by the colours and textures of the natural world. I work in two different styles - figurative and abstract - with nature being the common thread. I am a keen photographer, and whenever possible I draw from my own photographs. My figurative work is always based on wildlife in a particular area. I love animals and like to observe how they move and interact. I draw tonal pencil illustrations onto paper and print them onto fabric which I meticulously hand stitch colour with texture, embellishing the birds, insects and other wildlife while retaining the monochrome drawing as the background. I stitch with machine embroidery threads to add the finest detail.

My abstract embroidery series is inspired by the colourful skies at sunset and sunrise which I have photographed in Richmond upon Thames where I live. I hand stitch hundreds of French knots mixing wool, embroidery threads, beads and sequins to create a colourful pointillism style.

My artworks take hours and hours to create. I am obsessed and passionate about each piece: I seek to create something special to make it one-of-a-kind.

Susannah Weiland is a hand embroidery artist with a passion for texture and colour. She works in two different styles, figurative and abstract, both of which revolve around nature. In her figurative work she combines tonal pencil drawing with delicate hand embroidery to create one-off pieces of art.

Susannah studied Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University and, over the past 23 years, has pursued a career in the fashion industry as a graphic and textile designer. Inspired by wildlife and nature, she is a keen photographer and often works from her own images. 

She has exhibited at ICFF in New York and at a number of events in the UK, including London Craft Week, London Design Festival and Decorex. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, in particular the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2021) Bath Society of Artists Annual Exhibition (2022), The Broderers’ Exhibition (2022) and the Royal Cambrian Academy Open Exhibition (2023).

In 2021 Susannah was awarded a QEST scholarship to study technical hand embroidery at The Royal School of Needlework. Last year she took part in an exhibition at Fortnum and Mason with QEST to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and received the Newby Trust Award at Cockpit Studios.
