CHARCOAL
h: 9 w: 24 d: 1 (cms).
This charcoal piece explores the quiet tension between stillness, chaos and looming change. A field stretches across the composition; above it, dense dark clouds gather across the upper half of the horizon, suggesting a shift in mood and atmosphere. The work explores tension between internal chaos and external stillness , almost reflecting human emotions through grief and chaos. The tiny landscape was done on Arches printmaking paper with charcoal powder . The charcoal powder was applied with a brush and a putty rubber was used to 'sculpt' the piece and create light. The work is entirely intuitive and is not based on any place.

Ceramics
h: 16 w: 12 d: 10 (cms).
This piece is part of a larger series of ‘muglets’, altered forms each uniquely expressing versions of impermanent introspective observations through the inherent permanence of the ceramic surface. The work begins on the potters’ wheel, using thrown porcelain and red clay to establish a sense of tension and play between the outer and inner experience. The surface is then layered with intuitive uses of slips layered with observations of the everyday and more introspective reflections expressed in a stream-of-consciousness style. This particular piece of work explores the idea of sleep and dreams in a playful and personal manner.

Charcoal on painted board
h: 88 w: 154 d: 2 (cms).
Home made Willow charcoal on plywood board, my first big drawing in charcoal. An emotional piece for me as this was made from reference photos taken in Bristol, on Gloucester road, just above the Bristol Flyer pub. Our eldest son had been sectioned again and was in a Bristol hospital. I went up to visit him, and we were allowed out for two hours together. We sat in my van drinking coffee, when a big rain cloud came over. We took pictures through the windscreen, having fun arguing about the best one and he said it would make a great charcoal drawing. This was the first time we were able to have a proper conversation like this for some years. This was the largest drawing I have done in a long time. It needed to be this big in order to abstract the image and show the detail that my son and I were really enjoying. I found the eye moving around the piece a challenge, pushing my skills. It was on the easel for some time.

I am interested in words. I was inspired by the lyrics of the John Lennon song ‘How?’ on the ‘Imagine’ album: ‘How can I go forward when I don’t know which way I’m facing?’ I thought about how I could depict this, and drew the three different road views (Gay Street, Brock Street, Bennett Street), whilst standing on The Circus roundabout in Bath.

Pencil/ Ink pen 0.5 and colour crayon pencils on paper.
h: 59 w: 84 d: 1 (cms).
The artwork is of a not so well known street in Bath, Queenwood Avenue, Bath. With some of the neighbours in the middle of the street. Some of the animals and birds that visit the street have been included. The planes fly over head, especially Easy jet and the Balloons on a daily bases sometimes. “Middle of the street” artwork , I did several drawings, photos /of houses in the street and a painting in progress first. Then for the artwork I used measurements and judgements by doing the pencil drawing first. Then carefully I went over the pencil marks in ink pen 0.5. I decided to add colour crayon pencil to the characters, the street, the sky, easy jet and air balloons. The houses I left, as black ink line and white space. So to lead to the imagination of what if. To think mostly about the houses, the slope and the characters in the street. I named the artwork “in the middle of the street “ from the music group Madness. …. The lyrics : Our house “in the middle of the street “.

Sand and cement, girls dress and wooden frame.
h: 160 w: 45 d: 45 (cms).
My research connects to trauma and how we can use variations of ourselves to explore past events as a coping mechanism. This led me to using alter egos as a way to create artwork that could test, trial and play with concepts such as space, time, history and reenacting past, troubling events to come to terms with difficult experiences. My PhD research generated three alter egos who, through auto-narrative writing, came to life and started to make artwork that was different from work I would make in my typical art practice. They became a space to imagine and create. They fought, they bickered, and they created fantastical stories and artwork. This piece is part of the generative process. This girl's dress is frozen in time by dipping it in concrete. It transforms it into an antiquity and allows the viewer to interpret it with their own stories and ideas of the life that was led by the little girl who would have worn it. 80cm tall x 45cm W without the plinth. 160cm h with plinth.

Laser cut mountboard with neon paper
h: 52 w: 36 d: 3 (cms).
"Neon Depths" explores repetition, geometry, and dynamism through colour and form. A basic geometric shape is repeated in a grid with varying elongation. Each layer is offset inwards with vivid neon colours to create a sense of depth. The precise alignment and alternating patterns generate an optical effect, where the flat surface appears to shift as the viewer’s eye moves across it. By balancing symmetry with variation, the piece captures both order and movement.

Oil paint
h: 99 w: 104 d: 1 (cms).
Gut represents the visceral, internal forms within us through absence; the lack of material in the centre evoking a bigger sense of the gut than a literal representation. My work looks at abstracting the figure to depict the organic feelings our bodies possess. The intentional crop and androgynous form allow for no objectification or identification of the sitter. Instead, it allows for an appreciation of the mundane yet profound undulations and contours that reside within our skin.

The painting is of one of my favourite corners in my neighbourhood. Walking there one evening, I loved the soft colours of the night, with the streetlight and light from the car illuminating the trees. The branches on the bare trees turned slightly spooky with a house hiding beneath them, with shadows cast on the road and an old mossy brick wall….it was calm and peaceful, but mysteriously enchanting at the same time.

Oil on linen
h: 60 w: 30 d: 2 (cms).
The painting is centred around a print from the Ashmolean in Oxford. The print is of Manet’s preliminary study for his later and larger painting, “The Balcony”. In both he uses the same two female models: Berthe Morisot and the less famous, Jenny Claus, a violinist. In the study it is Jenny who takes centre stage, but later it is Morisot who is seated and all important and ultimately more famous. Consequently, while attracted by the freedom of the study, I also wanted to pay tribute to prim overlooked Jenny. So, with flowers and a new composition, dominated by verticals, horizontals and criss-crossing diagonals, she plays again the main role.

Cast Glass
h: 35 w: 45 d: 35 (cms).
2 part piece. Created from folded paper forms dipped in wax then cast into glass. 'Our external experiences and awareness are delicate, easily disrupted by the world around us.' The folded, paper-like forms embody moments of stillness and consciousness, preserved in glass as a reminder of their fleeting yet profound significance. Two forms appear delicate as though they are made of paper, or very thin glass, in fact they are solid forms. A polished top creates an illusion of depth within the form, as though one could place their hand straight into the centre.

Glazed Stoneware Ceramic with found Cornish driftwood and copper wire
h: 21 w: 13 d: 8 (cms).
HEADLAND My sculptures are an interplay between my formal architectural training and my affection for land and seascapes, particularly those of West Cornwall. HEADLAND is slab built by hand (and therefore hollow with only two very small air holes on the underside) in a grogged stoneware clay. I intuitively formed all marks on the raw clay surface using the attached piece of found Cornish driftwood. The circular piercing is central to the piece and offers a way through the sculpture both physically and metaphorically. I want you to be drawn in, to see a way through the landscape, and the darkness within, and what might be on the other side. HEADLAND is hand painted with layers of several different glazes to capture the fluidity of my thinking at that moment in time and to reflect differing light conditions in the sea and on land. HEADLAND is stamped LNC with my handmade stamp. (Lou Nicholson Ceramics)

Laser cut mountboard with neon paper
h: 54 w: 38 d: 1 (cms).
"Neon Pathways" is an exploration of movement and vibrancy. Set against a black background, the composition features layers of pathways that curve and loop with seamless fluidity. The pathways are arranged in bold parallel bands of neon colours, creating a glowing, electric effect that represents both retro aesthetics and contemporary techniques. The repetition of rounded arcs and geometric turns gives the piece motion. The contrast between the saturated neon hues and the dark void of the background heightens the sense of depth and dynamism, drawing the viewer’s eye along each winding course. Carved and ebonised Elm, antique nails, jute rope, lace, gold leaf, steel base
h: 150 w: 40 d: 40 (cms).
Martyr I pays homage to those innocent human beings suffering in a world marked by displacement, trauma and coercive control. The bent form, blackened wood, nails, and bindings speak of pain, exhaustion and restraint, while the gold leafed triangle veiled in lace represents the inner self - fragile, sacred and preserved even under duress. The title Martyr I conveys both the endurance of suffering and the dignity of survival: a witness to pain yet also to resilience and the unbroken core within.
