Mended, Not Broken explores resilience, vulnerability and the beauty of visible repair. Drawing on my own experience of physical and emotional healing, the portrait is printed onto natural fabric and developed through free-motion machine embroidery, adding texture, definition and emotional depth. Metallic gold thread travels across the face and body like repaired fractures. Inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, where damage is highlighted rather than concealed, the stitching represents healing, renewal and the emotional scars that may remain after physical wounds have healed. The raw, frayed edges and trailing threads suggest fragility, while the gold lines celebrate strength and survival. The figure has not been returned to an untouched state; instead, her experiences have become part of her identity. Selected for the ArtGemini Prize Finalists Exhibition, 2025.
