The Beginning and End of Something reflects the landscape’s transition into autumn: energy withdrawing, colour flaring then fading, a pause before the palette cools and deepens. This cycle mirrors my own sense of loss and longing after my children’s summer visits, balanced with the contentment of returning to solitude and attunement with the natural world. Working from photos taken on walks, I sketch loosely in charcoal before painting directly and gesturally. My process layers memory and intuition, mixing specific hues, then softening with glazes, shifting forms between focus and abstraction. I approach colour as my primary language, guided by nature and animated by a childlike joy in oil paint. This painting captures not nature itself, but the fleeting act of seeing and experiencing—a single moment in time.
