This painting is inspired by my visit to the Somerset site of Heal Rewilding (a nature recovery charity), near Frome. It depicts my first encounter with a wild beaver dam, on a crisp autumn morning during 2025 (the year when the dam appeared). Wild beavers have recently made a welcome return to the United Kingdom, after being hunted to extinction on mainland Britain centuries ago. They skilfully build watery homes for themselves and, inadvertently, for other wildlife. In doing so they bring benefits to people, such as downstream flood alleviation and creating delightful places of wonder - I have attempted to capture the latter.
