I have painted Carousels since I left art college starting with the one in Prince's Street Gardens. I draw from life then work on my paintings in my studio. These ones are more and more from drawings but also my mind. Someone said that the carriage is a little macabre. The Carousel in La Rochelle which I used for inspiration has a slightly ghostly feel about it. As a child I only went on Carousels and as a result was often left there while my mother took my siblings to other rides so there is a fascination and both a feeling of safety but aloneness if I were to dig deeper, I suffer from extreme motion sickness so always wonder why I paint them. Maybe to make them stay still.
