This work reinterprets the classical figure of Amphitrite, traditionally depicted as the Greek goddess of the sea, to address the contemporary issue of marine pollution. The fish skeleton filled with "Friendly Floatees" references the 1992 cargo spill in which thousands of plastic bath toys were lost in the Pacific Ocean and later washed ashore around the world, becoming an enduring symbol of the persistence of plastic pollution in our oceans. By contrasting the idealised imagery of classical mythology with the reality of environmental degradation, the work explores the consequences of consumer culture and humanity's impact on marine ecosystems. It invites viewers to reflect on the enduring presence of plastic waste in the oceans and our collective responsibility to protect them.
