The most valuable cargo on the Titanic were the feathers bound for the New York hat trade – only second in price per oz to diamonds and gold. Egrets, Birds of Paradise, and Ostriches were being driven to extinction by the fashion for lifelike and excessive bird and feather decorations. This destructive situation sparked the birth of the Society for the Protection of Birds (later the RSPB) in 1889. “Murderous Millinery” was a familiar slogan of the protest movement. To weight the base I have inset three sheets of lead – only later learning of its essential role in ship building to provide ballast and to make vessels watertight.
