This painting explores the relationship between colour, form, pictorial structure and space. As a reference I created a cardboard relief, using it as a starting point to investigate the interplay of light, shadow and space. Through the application and removal of paint, the surface is continually reworked, creating shifting relationships between depth and flatness. A grid provides the underlying structure, acting as a counterpoint to the more intuitive and spontaneous elements. The push and pull of colour, emphasises the illusion of space within the picture plane. Layers of paint reveal traces of decisions made throughout the process, allowing the history of the work to remain visible and become an integral part of the finished painting.
