Glazed Stoneware Ceramic with found Cornish driftwood and copper wire

h: 21 w: 13 d: 8 (cms).

HEADLAND My sculptures are an interplay between my formal architectural training and my affection for land and seascapes, particularly those of West Cornwall. HEADLAND is slab built by hand (and therefore hollow with only two very small air holes on the underside) in a grogged stoneware clay. I intuitively formed all marks on the raw clay surface using the attached piece of found Cornish driftwood. The circular piercing is central to the piece and offers a way through the sculpture both physically and metaphorically. I want you to be drawn in, to see a way through the landscape, and the darkness within, and what might be on the other side. HEADLAND is hand painted with layers of several different glazes to capture the fluidity of my thinking at that moment in time and to reflect differing light conditions in the sea and on land. HEADLAND is stamped LNC with my handmade stamp. (Lou Nicholson Ceramics)
