‘Matrix’ was constructed over several weeks from dropped remnants of wheel throwing demonstrations, and completed with a handbuilt base inspired by graffiti'd remnants of coastal defences. Garish slips were poured and splattered onto the works and dried chunks of coloured clay were flung at the wet surfaces rather than being placed, the idea being to see what sticks rather than directing the end result. Relinquishing control reflects my dialogic relationship with clay and the desire for humanity to shift from a controlling relationship with the earth to a collaborative one. My process takes place at the intersection of intention and intuition, a dialogue between myself and material and between head and heart. I link this with Carl Jung’s term ‘The Transcendent Function’ which expresses the idea something authentic will occur if we can suspend thought, and allow the felt urge to arise from the unconscious.
