From a series of paintings engaging with the Aylesbury Estate in South London, location of my last studio. Once Europe’s largest social housing development, much is now demolished and what remains is in a sad condition. This painting connects the built with the human; the residents have often been derided or ignored in the politically loaded discussions about the estate. The title – Postcode Lottery – highlights that where people live massively affects lifetime outcomes for them and for society at large. I’m also minded that a not dissimilar development around 3 miles north of The Aylesbury (the Barbican) is a very different story. The composition was developed from sketches made on site.
